Welcome to First Grade! The first graders completed a full week of school and have transitioned smoothly into their routines. Our students are prepared and eager to learn the first grade curriculum. The first few days of school have been very busy. We have spent a lot of time getting to know one another.
Each month Merrymount focuses on a different character trait. The children have begun discussing, reading, and writing about the September character trait, Citizenship. We are learning how to be good citizens at home, in school, and in our community. The character traits correlate with the first grade social studies curriculum. Upcoming character traits this fall will be Trustworthiness and Responsibility. Throughout the fall, the first grade mathematicians will review number sense and dig deeper into addition and subtraction. We are hoping to get math centers up and running soon for both whole group and small group math instruction and hands on activities. Reading is being presented in the first grade classrooms all day through phonics instruction, vocabulary building, grammar, comprehension, and reading fluency. We strive to meet the needs of every reader in an engaging and beneficial way. Some genres we will be focusing on this fall include informational text, realistic fiction, and fantasy to name a few! |
